Dr. Tarek Rashwan is an Assistant Professor in Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nottingham and concurrently an Honorary Lecturer at University College London, a Visiting Academic at the Open University, and a registered professional engineer in Ontario, Canada with over 15 years experience in waste research. He completed his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a specialization in Environment & Sustainability from the University of Western Ontario.
Alongside students and international collaborators, Tarek is currently researching various environmental engineering topics that support a low-carbon, clean, and circular economy. His primary research is focused on furthering the development and understanding of applied smouldering to destroy harmful contaminants – such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) – and harness energy/resources from challenging wastes. Tarek is a member of IWWG and IRACE and co-chairs the IWWG Thermal Treatment Task Group.
