Prof. Cristina Trois is the Director of the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies at Stellenbosch University, in South Africa. Full Professor in Environmental Engineering (since 2015), with a degree in Environmental Engineering and a PhD in Geo and Environmental Engineering. Former Dean of Engineering (2012-2018) and former DSI/NRF SARCHI Chair in Waste and Climate Change (2018-2023) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (RSA).
Her main fields of expertise are: Environmental Sanitary Engineering, Waste and Resources Management, Bioenergy, Waste to Energy, Biogas and bio-hydrogen from organic waste, Systems Modelling and Decision-support tools, Carbon emission control from zero waste in Africa and developing countries, Circular Economy.
Prof Trois is author of over 150 peer-reviewed publications and Series Editor for Springer (Nature) for the Series “Waste as a Resource”, Co-editor of the Springer book “Waste Management in Developing Countries”. President of the IWWG (International Waste Working Group) 2025 – 2026. Prof. Trois has over 25 years of working experience in Environmental Sanitary Engineering and has been the principal investigator as well as the project coordinator of many multi-million feasibility and R&D waste management projects with municipalities in South Africa and Africa. She is the developer of the WROSE TM Model /Decision-support Tool, and advisor for climate services, waste and climate change, waste to energy projects,
CDM projects to the South African Government and inter-governmental organisations.
