Professor Coulon’s professional interests include: soil and water chemistry; fate and transport of chemicals in surface and subsurface waters; water and wastewater treatment; soil and sediment treatment; hazardous waste site remediation; energy and environment; population and environment; and public communication of environmental science and engineering. His research achievements address international priorities under the umbrella of the Water-Soil-Waste nexus across sectors and scales. His work is premised on the understanding that environmental resources are inextricably intertwined and therefore there is a need of advancing a nexus approach to enable integrated and sustainable management of water, soil and waste systems. His research influenced policy development, waste disposal strategies and provided pragmatic, risk-based solutions for the remediation of contaminated environments. He has published numerous articles in leading environmental engineering and science journals; book chapters and articles for the popular press with substantive contributions to oil remediation, process emission and control at industrial sites and environmental risk management. He is currently member of the French National Research Agency, Environmental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology Subcommittee (since 2009); EPSRC and NERC Peer Review College, (since 2009); the National Research Foundation College (NRF, South Africa; since 2010) and the National Centre of Science and Technology Evaluation Peer Review College (Ministry of Education and Science, Republic of Kazakhstan since 2015). He served as an Executive member of the Society of Brownfield Risk Assessment (2010-2017). He is an Associate Editor of Science of the Total Environment and Frontiers in Environmental Science
